Island Batik Creative Borders and Binding

October seems to be flying by! Last month I shared the Scattered quilt that I made with my Cherry Berry collection from Island Batik.Scattered Cherry Berry Deck

I had some block lefts and also some of the batiks so I have decided to make pillows for our bed that will go with the Cherry Berry Scattered quilt. I have had so much fun with this beautiful collection!Island Batik Back to School Blog HopThis month the challenge for the Island Batik ambassadors is to create a project with creative borders.

Island Batik Creative Borders and Binding

Looking through the scraps of my Cherry Berry collection I found that I had quite a few scraps that were a little over 3 inches so I pulled out my AccuQuilt GO! 2 1/2″ finished half square triangle die (HST) and started using up some of my Cherry Berry batiks.Island Batik Creative Borders Binding and AccuQuilt HST dieI love how fast all of the HSTs were cut and most of the scraps were used up!
Island Batik Creative Borders Binding and AccuQuilt HST dieI’m not sure yet what other borders I will add to the blocks to make my pillow shams. I would like to end up with king size pillows. Island Batik Creative Borders Binding

Remember when I said most of the scraps were used up? I had little strips leftover and I couldn’t throw them in the garbage. I am just stitching them together and maybe I’ll make a mug rug at some point.Island Batik Cherry Berry collection Borders Scraps

I won’t be working anymore on this project for a week or so as tomorrow we are heading up to Minnesota to visit with Bob’s mom. She will be 97 on Sunday! She can’t wait to see little Sadie again.

I’m sure we’ll be stopping at some quilt stores along the way!

We normally go up twice a year but didn’t make it in June since my dad was so sick. It seems strange to think about going on a trip and not having to let dad know when we will be back and make sure he has everything he would need while we are gone. It is hard to believe it is just a little over 2 weeks since he died. Miss you dad!

I love making pillows with leftover/extra blocks. Yours are going to look amazing with the added borders. I am the same way, can’t throw away scrap-strips 🙂

You’ll never stop missing your dad. I know.
    Enjoy your trip.
Love that you used those little strips of fabric like that. I save tiny pieces too. If I don’t use them I’m sure my granddaughters will enjoy gluing them to something someday!

Have a good & safe trip. I am pretty confident your Dad is going to be watching you closely, on your trip. Big hug. BTW – I lost my mom in ’92 and I still feel I need to call her and let her know when I’m heading off on a trip.

I love seeing ideas for creative pieced borders. But must admit that usually I wimp out, and put on plain borders. Maybe it’s time to step outside of another comfort zone and plan a pieced border on an upcoming project.
