Hanging wall hangings in my new studio

I have been having fun putting up wall hanging in my new studio. Months ago my brother brought me some panels that are used in as dividers in offices. They have metal on the back, foam and then fabric and I thought they would make a great design wall.

Some of you have been emailing me about them so here is some information about them. They are really wonderful as I can hanging my work on the walls and easily change them out at any time.

Unfortunately the fabric isn’t like flannel and the only way you can keep things on the wall is to use pins. We decided to used them to cover the walls of my new quilt studio so I could have wall hangings on the walls. We could only hang one high because of the dropped ceiling and heat vents. Builder Bob measured everything carefully.

He had to drill through the fabric and metal so he could attach grommets and screws to hang them as they are heavy. He would make a great quilter….he cut a little X in the fabric before drilling so the fabric wouldn’t fray and catch on the drill bit.

We could only get 4 panels on this wall. I don’t know if I will have room for anymore…..my room is filling up fast!!

This is why I wanted white walls in my quilt studio. I will be able to change wall hangings anytime I want to add lots of color to my room. I even printed out the free motion design for Leah Day’s new Machine Quilting Block Party – this is to remind me that I want to get working on this!Hanging wall hangings in my new studio
Remember the unpainted spot on the wall? With help my huge cupboard came downstairs. The plan is to never…ever…move it again. Builder Bob built this for me almost 8 years ago. It is 8 foot wide.

The top section was heavy!! My brother and Bob were aching after getting this set up.

I had fun starting to fill it up. Top shelves are almost all batiks. Lots of Island Batik fabrics there! As I have batik scraps I cut them into 1 1/2″, 2″ and 2 1/2″ squares and put them in the shoe boxes on the left side. They are getting full. Time for a scrappy batik quilt! The bottom section holds quilt magazine and my older fabrics and stuff.

The doors are back on the bottom and I am continuing to fill up the top shelves.

I also have a peg board up on the dead space behind the door coming into my studio. It is a perfect place to hang rulers and templates. I also put some of my patterns up there. My dad thought it looked like a store wall, LOL.

For the last two days I worked on a quilt instead of continuing to organize my new studio. I just finished a quilt that I can’t show you. It will be going to Spring Market and is made with Island Batik fabrics. I am still trying to figure out how I want my sewing machine setup but I have to say that I really liked having a big table to the left and of course behind my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine. I do all my piecing and free motion quilting on it.

I have been using a stool like this for about 3 years and love it! You can buy one for about $20 at a auto store. It is really for guys working on cars but I like the way it rotates and moves. I don’t care about a back on my chair as I seem to be up and down quite a bit and a regular chair was always in the way. I need to add more foam to it and recover it…..that is on the list.

I am having so much fun playing working in my new room!It takes no time at all to remove several of them when I want to hang a large quilt and take pictures.

Do you do most of your work on your vintage machine. I just purchaced a 1947 Singer it is a 15-90?. Looks a lot like yours. I really like the large bobbin. The bobbin winder is better than the ones on my modern machines.

  18. OMG CONNIE! I don't know what I'm more jealous of right now. The gorgeous room with all that space (even though I know you'll fill it soon hehe) or that fact you have such beautiful organization. PLEASE tell me you have tons more fabrics hiding out somewhere that are a huge mess like mine. LOL

Seriously, it looks great. So glad they got that cabinet down there. I wonder why they didn't go rent an appliance dolly or something to save their backs a little. That wall board that was put up looks great. I never thought of using those panels before. That SWAP Shop we buy stuff from once in awhile just had a group of those office divider panels for sale not that long ago. And stuff there is so cheap but sadly, I never thought of using those. I had told Curt we should get them and we'll divide up the living room with them. LOL Yes, I was kidding.

SO? When should I expect you here to help me organize my mess now that you're done? ha

  19. What a fantastic way to use those dividers, it sure is a great way to display your wonderful quilts, enjoy your beautiful new studio.

  20. I love your new studio. You deserve it! What are you making your old studio into?

Fantastic post of your new wall! I am so glad you posted about the stool as I saw it yesterday and wondered about it. So I assume it raises and lowers? At is't highest will you measure from the floor to the top of the cushion please. I am not as happy with my chair as I'd like.

  27. Very neat. I like your little cupboard nook. The cupboard fits like it was made with that space in mind! Looks like a fun place to work.
