I have a quick and easy quilt tutorial to share with you today for some cute and happy placemats! I think you will really enjoy this tutorial!

Summer placemats on glass table

I don’t know about you, but we always use place mats on our table all the time and these are perfect for summer out on the deck.

Change the colors and make them for Christmas, Halloween, or any other time of the year.

Summer Placemats

Each placemat is approximately 12″ x 16″

I used a fat quarter bundle of Marblehead Pleasing Pastels by Ro Gregg for Fabri-Quilt for my summer placemats and will also be sharing a matching table topper made with the same fabrics.

Happy Summer Placemat Tutorial

Here is a better look at all the beautiful fabrics, there are 17 fat quarters! I really like the marbleized look and the fabrics work perfectly as blends with other quilt fabrics.

Happy Summer Placemat Tutorial fat quarters of fabrics

I picked six different fat quarters to use to make placemats.

Happy Summer Placemat Tutorial six fabrics picked for placemats

Cutting:

Cut the six fat quarters into 2 1/2″ strips.

For each placemat you will need:

  • 24 – 2 1/2 inch x 2 1/2 inch squares
  • 12 – 2 1/2 inch x 4 1/2 inch rectangles
Cutting blocks for placemats

Sewing:

  • Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance
  • Mix and match the different colors of blocks
  • Sew 2 of the 2½” x 2½” squares and 1 – 2½” x 4½” rectangle together
  • Each section will measure 4½” x 4½”

Make 12 blocks for each placemat

Placemat sections of blocks

Arrange the blocks in a pleasing design.

placemat blocks arranged

Hopefully you won’t have two of the same color touching. After I took this photo I started piecing and realized the bottom left block needed to be turned again.

Placemat rows

Sew 4 rows of 3 blocks or…….3 rows of 4 blocks, I have no idea why I sewed them this way!

Pieced placemat

Then sew the rows together. Your place-mat will measure 12½” x 16½”.

Quilted placemat

Add your backing and batting and quilt as desired.  Make your binding with the leftover 2 1/2 inch strips using my machine binding tutorial.

Two placemats on the deck

They look great out on our deck and perfect with the flowers on the glass table.

Placemats on glass table

They also look great in the kitchen.

Placemat with dishes on it

We now have four beautiful happy placemats to use on our deck or in the kitchen.

The Summer placemat tutorial was originally posted in July of 2015 and has been updated.

Four placemats on glass table

Table Topper tutorial

I also have enough of the fat quarters leftover to make a table topper to go with the placemats. I used a different block pattern but everything coordinates perfectly. Be sure and check out that tutorial!

  1. Love those soft ice cream sherbet colors, they looks so good together.

  2. We use placemats every day. I have made most of mine and change my theme each month. I may just have to make these . I usually like to have 6 as we often have 203 grandkids eat with us. They are young and sometimes messy and rarely use a napkin, but I just like the feel of a placemat under my plates and I love the cloth napkins. As always, thanks for the inspiration.

  3. Connie,
Again you have outdone yourself. So simple yet so beautiful. Keep up the great work. Love you sense of colors.

So simple and so beautiful! Love the idea of different fabric choices for different times of the year. I am thinking of using Canadian themed fabrics for Canada Day placemats 🇨🇦!

  5. Joan Sheppard says:

Thanks! Wish I could make the little icon on the side give you 100 hearts for this. So cool like a big bowl of sherbert. I needed a project for doing a tutorial at our Quilt Bee – just 10 of us, about free motion quilting and this will be perfect. At home we use placemats all over the house even the bathroom.
Everyone has their “fav” at the dinner table to put over the tablecloth (kids age 5 and 7). This will be so fun to make but especially love the color choice. Thanks for this – I love seeing the comments and wonder if things have changed for any of these people. Must feel like a big extended family for you! Thanks again.

    1. Shirley Polmateer says:

Lovely. Looks like summer. We do use place mats and a table cloth. A great way to use up little pieces. I can see the blocks positioned in a different way. Might have to get busy. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Thank you for the tutorial. I also use placemats for every meal and I’m always looking for cute patterns. This is a keeper.

  131. Love your placemats and the beautiful fabrics! Yes I do use them on my table. Thanks so much.

  132. Yep, we use placemats on the table, I don't like table cloths covering up my nice wood table!

  133. Very pretty placemats Connie. I really like the quilting you've done to them and think I might even be able to handle that. I sure wouldn't guarantee straight lines like yours though. haha

I always used to have placemats on my table until I moved to this house years ago. The kitchen is SO tiny; well, not really tiny, but the layout is very bad so the only table we can have in there is only about 4 feet long. The placemats are practically stacked over each other on that tiny table so a runner is about the best I can do. When the holidays come and we have the kids coming over though, we set up a banquet sized table in the living room, and yea that takes up my entire living room sadly, but for the holidays I either use a tablecloth, or placemats. The placemats I had though were very old so I got rid of them. I need to make more of them. Gee, maybe since our dining table is in the living room with the Christmas tree, maybe I should make the placemats match a Christmas tree skirt which I very much need as well. LOL

  134. teachpany says:

We use place mats at our table. I try to make them and use fabric that coordinates with the seasons or holidays. Love your pattern and fabric on yours.

  173. Yes, I do use placemats. I like to vary with seasons, occasions and what meal I am serving. Love the variety of colors.

  174. We definitely use placemats on our table. It is round so I had to design mats to fit the curve. Need to make new ones, so would love to win the giveaway. Bobkat1896@sbcglobal.net

I always use placemats both on my couter eating section and my dining table. Even if I have a tablecloth I like the look of placemats over it…hugs, lovely fabrics!! Julierose

  185. We use placemats all the time. They make the tuna salad or wienies and beans look much fancier! And I'm happy to see that my son's family uses them with their 4 and 6-year old girls.

  186. We go in spurts–depending on mood, or the state of our laundry basket, I suspect. Yours are awfully cute and might inspire me to keep on top of things. 🙂

  187. I left a comment over on the tutorial. Thanks again, these would look great on my sister's table.
