The Lovely Drunkard baby quilt is made with 3½-inch quilt blocks, if you were wanting to make a large quilt just use a bigger Drunkard’s Path quilt block like the one I used for my easy Drunkard’s Path quilted pillow.

24″ x 33″

You will make (11) rows of (8) quilt blocks for the baby quilt.

It is always handy to have a “few” unfinished projects around……..especially when you want to try something new.

I bought a bolt of Hobbs Heirloom batting and have been anxious to try it out.  I have a 30-yard bolt and when I took it out of the plastic…..it expanded.

Right now I have it sitting in my small laundry room. One more room is taken over by quilting!

Anyway, I had a batik quilt ready to be quilted and wasn’t sure if I wanted to use Warm & Natural or the Hobbs Heirloom so I cut off a piece of the Hobbs batting and quilted this lap quilt.

using different batting for the quilt

About a fourth of the way through quilting, I realized a couple of things……I wasn’t using batiks, I was trying out a new thread that wouldn’t be the same and……I was doing a much bigger free-motion stitch than I would on the batik.

So my experiment didn’t work but……I finished another small quilt!

The Hobbs Heirloom is definitely a lighter weight than the Warm & Natural and a little loftier.  I still want to try Quilter’s Dream and wool batting.

If you have been wanting to make a quilt project using the Drunkard’s Path quilt block, take a look at the Desert Path table runner or the Drunkard’s Path Pillow.

Thanks for sharing this little quilt. I keep trying different battings looking for the "perfect" one. I haven't tried the Hobbs batting, but seeing you quilt makes me want to. Something a little lighter and loftier sounds good.

Saw your quilt and had to laugh. I just pulled a couple of charms of Lovely and made some dresdens today then saw your post this evening. I guess great minds think alike. I do love how your quilt turned out. It's so springtime and with the weather we're having I need a little spring. Stay warm.

  4. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHhhhhhhhh Connie!!!!!! You know I am just drooling now over this quilt! I love this one.
Funny about the batting expanding. I would have loved to be there to watch your eyes when that happened. LOL Sorry, probably not so funny since it means you had to find somewhere to store it now. Oh well, if you have to block the washer and dryer I guess you just can't do laundry anymore. 🙂

    It turned out beautiful!

  6. A very lovely Drunkard's path quilt. I'm also working on a Drunkard's design. Stopping by from Needle and Thread Thursday.

  7. It looks terrific and the snowy, sunny day sure brings out the colors. I think a couple of my last quilts seemed a bit flat, and was actually thinking I would have liked a loftier batting.

Your quilt turned out lovely. I like the Warm and natural, but it is heavy. I like the look that the loft seems to add a bit more Poof!

  15. I would love to make a Drunkards Path quilt – made blocks, but not a full quilt. This is very pretty.

  16. That is such a pretty little quilt, Connie. The colors are wonderful. I'm sure you will use up that batting quickly with the amount of quilting you do.

  17. Love the photo of your threads! My fave batting for hand quilting is the dream cotton. And for machine quilting I like the warm and natural.

  18. your quilting looks lovely! glad you seem to be feeling better too.
I'm staying inside sewing today, was supposed to go to a quilt guild meeting but NOT going outside in THIS cold….
