If you enjoy making string blocks, you will enjoy this fun orange string applique flower quilt block. I have been making this block in different colors using the scraps in my stash.

I’m using simple half-square triangle blocks and a string pieced center that the applique is done on. Here you can see the little batik leaves that I have added to the quilt block.

I pulled out my string flower blocks and added an orange one to the collection. Using coordinating fabrics makes it easy to make a quilt block like this.

Here is the applique on the flower before I did my free-motion applique around it. A closeup of the free motion applique is always fun to see.

As you can see, I have made quite a few blocks like this.

Here are the diagrams showing how I pieced together the rows.

Orange String Applique Flower Block Tutorial

The string pieced center is 6½” x 6½”. I always use a page from our old telephone books for the string piecing. I cut the paper 7″ square and then trim the strings before I rip off the paper.

  • Cut two cream block 5″ squares and cut diagonally.
  • Add them to sides of the string pieced block.
  • Trim to 8½” x 8½” square.
  • The border is made up of 2½” squares.
  • Use the directions on the Affinity block to make the half square triangle blocks.
  • The diagram above shows you how to arrange your blocks.

The orange string applique block will measure 12½”x 12½”
