Rainbow Scraps for January

I had a plan to make a bunch of blue string blocks for my Rainbow Challenge for 2014
but I didn’t get that done. I want to make a chevron type quilt and I’m not giving up yet……the month isn’t over or….I might be a little late on the first month of blocks.

For now I am playing with a new block. Actually I started out wanting to do the free motion cross hatch on a flower so I pulled out a box of circles that I already had cut and remember the neutral colored string blocks I made…..I’m still using them for all kinds of projects. Anyway, I appliqued the flower on the block and then decided to make it bigger and also use some of my BLUE scraps.

I think I would like it better with the corner half square triangles turned in the opposite direction with the blue to the outside of the block. Now I am thinking that a block similar to this each month in a different color would be fun….what do you think?

Here is the quilt that I made using the neutral blocks in case you missed it – Garden Maze. I have been asked many times to make a pattern for this and….it is on the list!

I made a rainbow string quilt for my 2012 quilt and quilted it using a QAYG method which you can read more about in that post.

Have you ever taken part in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge? I looked back and I first started doing it in 2011. It is fun and there really aren’t any rules. I remember the first year making something for RED and emailing asking if I could add some black and brown to it. Angela told me there were NO rules!

I love the colors! The block looks beautiful as is….but turning the blue HST to the outside would set the block off even more. A block a month would be wonderful!

I think it is a great block and could be used as a single, double color or go for it all with the rainbow.

What a great block! I've got this huge basket of strings to take with me on my next mission trip. I thought that would be an easy way to get it used up and get some string blocks made at the same time. But I love your flower and I know that would make the greatest quilt – not sure how many neutrals I have but maybe enough. 🙂 blessings, marlene

That's such a cute little flower, but the piecing really makes it something. I can't wait to see this quilt unfold.

I love pieced backgrounds for applique. Your new block with the blue surrounds looks so gorgeous! I think it would make a great rainbow scrappy quilt to make one in each month's colour. Love your garden maze quilt 🙂 and your string blocks one.

The color play would be fun. I love the blue. I'm a blue girl. My husband used to tell me when I was working that if he didn't go shopping with me for clothes and fabric for clothes that all my clothes would be blue and sailor. I even modified a jacket pattern and made a sailor type jacket. I still like blue. Since I'm a breast cancer survivor, I've added more pink to my palette. I like yellow but not on me. I like red, white, and blue. Other colors are more of a stretch for me. So a rainbow quilt would be a real stretch for me. I'm working on a queen size Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt and I'm trying to use a different solid color in each one, so I guess I am trying to branch out in my use of color. Thanks for an exciting post. I love how you used your string block and then added pizzazz!

You do such a great job of using your scraps. I really need to try to do more of that. My new goal for 2014 is to finish all the projects that I have started. That will definitely add to my scrap stash. I really want to do some string blocks. Add to my to-do-list. Love, love, love the appliqued flower on the string block!
