Have you ever taken any of the psychological tests where you are supposed to look at a image and tell what it is? Well when I looked at this I immediately saw a Green Man but since the batik is blue I decided it was a ice fairy…..see the little mouth? If you don’t know what a Green Man is you should google it and the images are so neat. We used to have several hanging in the woods when we lived at our last place and I do have one hanging outside on our deck but it is too cold to to take a picture.
Now you can see where the idea for this mug rug came from. Last month I showed you this table topper – I cut the little flourishes out with my Sizzix Big Shot and the mug rug is made from the negative image. When I cut it I made the piece a little bigger than I needed and folded it in half. Somehow I clipped a little bit off and that is when I saw the Ice Fairy.
I used the backing on this to make the binding. Usually I try and do this and cut a hole in the backing….so this time I didn’t quilt the background which made it easy to trim the top and batting. Then I trimmed the backing to 1 inch all around, folded each side over a 1/2 inch then folded again to give me a 1/4 inch binding. I sewed each side individually. It turned out nicer than I thought.
Then I went back and quilted the background.
The backing is a beautiful piece of batik that is all I have left of a piece my daughter bought me last year for my birthday.
