Not much quilting went on this weekend as we were camping at Lake Odessa in Iowa. Our friends have been staying there for a bit and this was actually the first time I have ever been there. Bob used to go fishing there and is talking about starting again. The first night it rained…..not fun but then the next day it cleared up and was beautiful.
Of course I had to take some walks and saw Turkey Vultures everywhere! They are not pretty birds and when they spread their wings they have a wingspan of almost 6 feet across.
They may not be pretty but they are important to our environment as they eat carrion (roadkill). They are nature’s recyclers.
I just found out that they do not have vocal cords and don’t squawk. Hmmm…..just before I saw a bunch of them in a dead tree I was hearing lots of squawking and figured it was them…..wonder what that was! Turkey vultures hiss.
We see them all the time around our house too. They enjoy eating all the dead fish that seems to show up on our shores. I didn’t get a very good photo but there were actually about 9 turkey vultures in this tree. They really weren’t afraid of me and I wonder if several of them had their wings spanned to dry them off as this was about seven in the morning.
Turkey vultures are protected by the Migratory Bird Act which means no shooting or throwing large rocks at them. Turkey vulture droppings are so potent that they can kill trees and permanently stain houses……I didn’t know this!
Since I had nothing new to show I went back and took a lot at what I worked on last year at this time. I was doing a lot of free motion quilting…..I forgot all about this neat piece! You can read out it here.
Be sure and check out the blogs that are twisting today!!
