Take a look at the fabrics in this quilt! There are some oldies and goodies and also some memories when I look at the squares in this quilt. Years ago I cut up lots and lots of fabric into 5 inch squares….I don’t think charm packs even existed then…….I think I am talking at least 15 years!
This 9 patch quilt turned out a lot bigger that I thought. After throwing it in the washer and dryer it measures 93 x 94. I think I started turning the squares into 9 patch blocks about 3 years ago with no particular quilt plan. This must have been when I was in one of my “quilt as you go” QAYG phases as I put blocks together and then used up some odd batting that I had and put on a backing and then just stitched around the blocks……no other quilting…..the large meandering shown below was added this week.
Anyway, there were 5 pieces stuck away in my “UFO” cupboard. I pulled them out, added some large meandering on my 15-91 Singer that isn’t in the frame. Then I sewed 4 of the huge “blocks” together to make the quilt. I still have one section left for a lap quilt.
I took these photos at my SIL’s again…..she added a pump to her backyard that had belonged to her dad. Hey….you can see my Jeep and the river in the background….yep….we live next door.
I can see this quilt being used as a tent for the grand-kids or definitely as a great outdoors quilt for picnics and such.
So how long did it take to make this simple 9 patch quilt???
- Cut squares……15 years ago
- Piece 9 patch blocks into 4 sections and add batting and backing….3 years ago
- Add additional quilting, sew sections together, bind, wash and dry…….this week
Here is a photo of the back……I have no idea why I ever switched from solids to prints…..maybe I was going to make 2 quilts……I know I have a lot of 9 patch blocks just like these in another “UFO” container!
