I have been practicing a lot of different free motion quilting and I never like to waste anything so I have been making sampler pieces that are the right size for place mats.
For those of you who do samples what do you do with them? I just sewed together some “vintage” 6 inch squares and also took some old 9-patch blocks and sewed them together and then cut them to a place mat size. I even used scraps of batting that I zig-zagged together.
Notice the binding on them? Pretty wild! I had several yards of duck cotton in my stash which is 60 inches wides so I decided it would be perfect for binding as I wouldn’t have to do any piecing. I think this fabric was something I had years ago for children’s clothing, if you aren’t familiar with duck cotton….it is thicker than regular cotton. The first binding I cut 2 1/2 inches wide but that made it hard to turn to the back so from then on I cut my binding 2 3/4 inches wides which worked pretty good.
I’ll be making more of these. They might be fun to put out at a party or family cookout…….I can see some interesting conversations getting started!
I just had to share this photo that I took yesterday…………..I walked into our bedroom and couldn’t believe that Bo was actually up on the bed with Simon and Bella! This is the closest she has ever gotten to them and the first time I’ve seen her on our bed. Believe it or not – the bed was made and the quilt nicely spread on top………..Simon and Bella have a habit of messing it up all the time.
See how Bo is the only one to cautiously look at me…………she still won’t have much to do with me.
Today Builder Bob and I are going to Davenport for our annual blood tests before our physicals. You know what that means?? Fasting for 12 hours and then lunch at The Olive Garden!
