Alpine Ice Snowflakes Quilt Tutorial

36″ x 50″

This is a beautiful collection that seems to change colors in my photos.

I first made a quilt for Fall Quilt Market using the darker fabrics in this collection which I considered blacks but are actually very dark blues.

There are also brighter blues in the Alpine Ice collection.

Alpine Ice Snowflakes Quilt Tutorial on steps

Just before Christmas, we got our first snowfall and it was perfect for taking photos of my quilt.

I had a lot of fun designing this quilt and will be making it in a larger size in different batiks soon and will share it soon.

Alpine Snowflakes Block Tutorial

Block size – 15 ½” unfinished

For each block you will need:

  • 4 – cream 5 ½” squares
  • 24 – 3″ print squares (4 will be used for the snowflake corners)

Step One

  1. Mark a diagonal line on a 3″ print square.
  2. place it on the corner of the cream block and stitch on the line.
  3. Fold back the 3″ print and trim.
  4. Make 4 per block.
Alpine Ice blocks

Step Two:

Sew five 4-patch blocks.

Alpine Snowflakes 4 patch blocks

Use the following diagram to layout the rows.

Sew the rows together.

Alpine Ice block

Make 6 blocks

Making the quilt: – sew the blocks together.

Alpine Ice 6 blocks

I used my AccuQuilt GO! and the GO! Holiday Medley Snowflake to add a little sparkle to my quilt. I added Heat n Bond Lite to my batik fabric before running it through the die. You could cut the snowflakes by hand but trust me……it is a lot faster with the AccuQuilt GO! die!

Cut out 6 Snowflakes – cut as follows:

  • 2 complete snowflakes
  • 6 half snowflakes
  • 4 quarter snowflakes
Alpine Ice AccuQuilt snowflakes

Carefully peel off the backing paper and attach the snowflakes to the background sections as shown. Applique as desired, I prefer to do a free-motion wiggle stitch on the raw-edge applique.

Add I used my vintage 15-91 Singer for all of my piecing, free-motion applique and quilting.

Alpine Snowflakes Applique

It is always fun to share a photo of the back of a quilt, the little trees in this print made a perfect backing for my Alpine Snowflakes quilt.

Alpine Snowflakes batik quilt on bed on bed

We recently redid our guest room and I wanted to show you the quilt on a bed, at 36″ x 50″ it makes a nice bed runner. This may look like a pretty stark room right now but…..come Spring…..it will be a blast of color!

I used the same fabrics in my Swirly quilt, be sure and check it out.

  80. Your quilt is beautiful! So nice to see it with the snow. I tend to sew with blues a lot but I really like scrappy. I just don’t have enough scraps yet to do many.

  81. Another delightful design! I love how you used those 4 patches.

  82. Your quilt is beautiful, thank you for the pattern. I don’t have any particular colors that I use consistently in my quilts. There is so much beautiful fabric out there that for me it is hard to just stick to the same colors all the time. I think that is why I love batiks as there is such avariation in the colors within one piece of fabric. I follow your blog through bloglovin.

  87. I DO love that pattern, and I’m glad you had the tutorial download already made for us. That is so kind of you! Thank you. I like the cool colors and find myself working with blue probably more than any other color. Green is my favorite color, but I don’t quilt with it nearly as often, for some reason. Thank you so much for the giveaway. I don’t actually follow your blog, or most others. I have favorites in a folder on my toolbar and just go look every once in a while. I’m taking classes part time, and it doesn’t leave me many hours a week for blog looking and commenting, but I always enjoy your blog when I’m here. =)

  94. What a perfect setting to show your new Alpine Snowflakes … in the bedroom then right out into the snow! Your pieced sections along with the fabric design gives a knit-sweater look IMHO.

I’ve never done a grey’ish quilt like this one, but I do like it. It seems that blues and greens creep into my quilts a lot. However, this last year, it seemed that red predominated. Guess that I am give equal-opportunity for quilt colours!

  95. Karin Callander says:

Wow, that quilt didn’t go together anything like how I thought it would! But it is lovely, and it’s the ONLY kind of snowflake I want to see!! I gravitate toward the ocean-y colors, turquoise, aqua, teal, purple, a bit of lemon green, bright coral and sandy brown thrown in. I guess living by the seashore will do that to a girl. So, I bet I could find a use for those blues you have left over!!

    Big hugs!

I follow you by email and have always loved doing scrappy quilts. Yet, recently, I have been making them in a much more balanced scrappiness manor. I truly do not have a favorite color for making a quilt in. Thank you for sharing and for the great giveaway! Have a fantastic day!

Connie, thanks for sharing another great tutorial. I LOVE the fabric line (gray tones). The snowflake quilt looks awesome, however, I am very drawn to the Swirly pattern, already marked in favorites! I am hoping to find the fabric line locally because I do have a bedroom with gray carpeting that could use something new.

  143. I love quilting with multiple scrappy colors loaded with bright and beautiful! I follow you at pinterest as well as other forums 🙂

  149. Blue and white is my favorite combination.

  150. I love the colors in the Alpine Ice collection. Your snowflakes turned out perfect. I follow on IG.

  151. What a fun quilt! Love the snowflakes and using the Go cutter is definitely the way to go! My favorite color is purple, but I love these blues. The collection I used for the hop had purple and blue in it so it was perfect! The way you placed the colors from the collection in your quilt really shows them off. Awesome job!

Awesome quilt!! Perfect for the manly man 😀 I tend to go with browns and greens in my palettes, then add splashes of whatever color makes the design sing.

I don’t know that I have a favorite color to quilt with but I have a lot of red and pink in my stash. 🙂

  155. I’ve always had a fondness for snowflakes. I used to cut them out by the dozens as a child (and adult lol). Your quilt looks like snowflakes at night because of the dark blues. I like it. I tend to lean toward bright colored fabrics with black as a contrast.

  156. Quilt looks awesome! Great idea to cut the snowflakes! Also how did you do the download for tutorial?

  157. I love Island Batiks and these winter colors are gorgeous. I follow because you are a fellow Ambassador 🙂

  158. Your Alpine Snowflakes design is sure a pretty pattern. Your quilt turned out beautifully in those sweet batiks! My favourite colours to quilt with are blue and green with a bit of orange for contrast. And I recently started following your blog by email by checking the box at the bottom after leaving a comment. That way I never miss a post! Thank you so much for sharing the tutorial, Connie!
