Do you ever see a quilt block that you just know you HAVE to make?

I felt that way when I saw the Snowflake block that is the first block in the new Merry Quilt-A-Long. This is a free QAL that just started and if you haven’t seen it yet…..you’ll probably be like me and want to make it!

I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long Block 1

I’m not sure if I’ll do the whole Merry Quilt-A-Long but this block was so beautiful and I couldn’t wait to make it!

I have been using the Cherry Berry batik collection that I received from Island Batik in my Ambassador box last Spring. I have made several different quilt projects with this collection and love the colors.

Are these Christmas colors?? Nope, but I don’t care……..take a look at the little cherries on the fabric.

Here is a table topper that I made with the Cherry Berry collection and my AccuQuilt Orange Peel die. I used the same pink background also.

You can see how I put creases in my background before adding the applique pieces.

I cut my background about 13 1/2 x 13 1/2 as I am going to go ahead and add the backing and batting for a Quilt As You Go quilt.

Next I had to make a decision on what color of thread to use for my free-motion applique.

It has been so crazy here that I think I forgot to mention that I am now a Aurifil Artisan for Aurifil Threads also!

I received a box of goodies that I’ll have to share. Isn’t it neat that the logo matches my Cherry Berry collection from Island Batik!

I have a neat multi-print batik that I am using for the backing of my block, the batting is Hobbs 80/20.

I am using my 15-91 vintage Singer sewing machine that only does a straight stitch so I did a little free-motion wiggle stitch around my applique pieces and caught the batting and backing in my stitches.

I’m not going to do anything with the background until I put the blocks together. Are you taking part in the I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long and have you done Block 1 yet?

Several of the Island Batik Ambassadors are also taking part in the I Wish You a Merry Quilt-A-Long:

I decided to go with Aurifil thread color #2455. I almost forgot that I bought the Rosemoor fabric collection from Craftsy, did I buy the fat quarters or the charm squares???

  1. I really like these colors in the snowflake! It’s a great block and looks good in every combination I’ve seen.

  2. Congratulations dear on being an Aurifil Artisan! Your Cherry flavored Island Batik Snowflake is stunnning. I also like your table topper. Getting to sew for even small projects must be giving you a world of peace…Well deserved my friend. <3

  3. Connie, seeing your block in cherry-colored batiks is so unique and gorgeous! How perfect that you have the Aurifil threads to match and make this even prettier! I have finished this first block, too, and will follow along with the QAL if time allows. Even if I’ve made just this first one, I can always make it into a pillow.

Oh, no, no, no, not another quilt-a-long! I find that I save the directions, fully intending to make everything, at some point, but I never have the time AT the time, and when I do get time, I just don’t have the inspiration anymore, and move along to something else. Argh, what’s a girl to do? But, I do love seeing all the pretty colors you’ve chosen – they are really fun and fresh! Congrats on your new affiliation/appointment! I know you’ve gotta love that!! 🙂 How’s pops??

this is so pretty. I love the table runner . and the fabrics are wonderful. This would make a fun pillow too.

  6. I’m not doing the quiltalong, but I really do like your block. Nice job!

  7. Connie, that is a beautiful block. I had seen it in Christmas fabrics but I think I like it even better in your Cherry Berry. I’ve been doing the Christmas QAL with Sew Fresh Quilts but I’m three blocks behind and I think another is coming out tomorrow so I’m not sure I should be taking on another one. Especially not one that includes applique. lol
