I had fun making this quilt using the new Cherry Berry batik fabric collection from Island Batik. I received the whole collection in my ambassador box and I’m using it this month for my Modern Batik Challenge project.

Swirly Quilt in Cherry Berry

For my Modern Batik challenge, I decided to use a new pattern I am working on for a quilt that won’t be shown until FALL Quilt Market called Swirly. I am having so much fun with the pattern and thought it would be fun to see it in this collection of batiks. The actual pattern will be for a much bigger quilt.

Update: Here is my Swirly quilt pattern.

Swirly quilt blocks

I started out making blocks in all of the different batiks in the collection but decided it was a little too busy for what I was doing.

So I sewed up some more blocks in just a few of the colors. Now to decide how I wanted to arrange the blocks for this smaller quilt project.

I finally chose this design and added some borders to it using more prints from the Cherry Berry collection.

The design looked a little plain and needed a little applique to bring it to life. I used my AccuQuilt GO! Orange Peel die to cut out some Orange Peels that I could raw-edge applique to my quilt.

That really added a lot to the quilt. I sewed several of the fabric strips together and then added Heat n Bond Lite to the back before running the fabric through my AccuQuilt GO! Electric Cutter.

Next month I’ll be sharing another project made with the Orange Peel die and the Cherry Berry Island Batik collection on AccuQuilt’s blog.

I used a white Aurifil thread for the stipple quilting on the cream batik background and a light tan Aurifil thread for the little bit larger quilting on the other batiks.

My Modern Batik Challenge is approximately 40″ x 40″
