To start off the year as Island Batik ambassadors we had two goals this month. One was to make a Galentine’s Day project and the second was to make and donate Kennel quilts. The size is 12″ x 18″ and are used in shelters so that the animals will be a little bit more comfortable. You can read more about making and donating kennel quilts at The Quilt Pattern Magazine Small Kennel Team.
Sadie with Kennel quilts

I decided to make my Kennel quilts with as few seams as possible so there would be nothing uncomfortable for a small animal to lay on. When we rescued little Sadie last fall she was skin and bones and we made little beds for her that were soft and comfortable. I decided not to add binding for the same reason. Looks like it is time to go the groomer again!

Kennel Quilts

The center section was 6 1/2″ by 18 1/2″ and then I added two 3 1/2″ x 18 1/2″ sections  to the center. The batiks I used were some I had leftover from other projects I have made with Island Batik fabrics. I thought the cats on the fabric would be perfect for the kennel quilts.

You can visit the Petfinder Foundation to find out where you can donate kennel quilts. I will be donating these to the Muscatine Humane Society.
Island Batik Kennel quilt back

Yesterday I showed you the beautiful fat quarters of Boundless Botanical that I had purchased and mentioned that Craftsy was running a sale again. Well…….I bought this neat kit called Color Block that used the Boundless Ombre fabrics as it was almost 50% off.Colorblock Quilt Kit

I also picked up the Boundless Blender Botanical Rainbow fat quarters and…..the Boundless Batiks in the 6 inch strips. That should keep me busy for a while!

  1. Thanks so much Darlene and you are so wonderful to have volunteered with Kennel Comforters. I wish I could bring every single one home and take care of them! Sadie definitely approved of them!

  2. What a sweet and comforting project. I know you stitched them with lots of love too. Island Batik Fabrics are so beautiful and they are very giving to others via you amazing Ambassadors. <3

    1. Thank you Sherry! I love working with Island Batik fabrics and being an ambassador for them!

  3. Beautiful quilts. Having volunteered with Kennel Comforters, I’ve been able to see animals living in shelters that have a good night sleep on a kennel quilt vs those that don’t. I really do think it helps provide them comfort and therefore they have a better chance of presenting themselves in a good light and finding a forever home. Bless you and the IB Ambassadors for helping animals living in shelters, as well as increasing awareness. Of course, I hope sweet Sadie also gave her approval for these kennel quilts.

  7. That was a good idea, I would not have thought about the seams. I’m sure with less seams they will last longer too.
