Colorful Psychedelic Placemats

Have you noticed that I seem to work with bright, fun colors….a lot!! I have finished another set of my psychedelic placemats! Did you notice I said “another set” A couple of years ago I had a beautiful bundle of fat quarters that I couldn’t decide what to do with.

This type of quilt pattern is called a crazy quilt style. There are all kinds of templates and patterns for them. I recently bought a new template set that makes 6 inch crazy blocks but I haven’t used it yet.

I know that has happened to me many times (and probably you) and I decided I was really going to cut them up and make something! I added a couple of other fabrics and then diced up the fabrics and sewed them back together again. I don’t think Builder Bob will ever get used to me doing that!

This is the final set of placemats, I got a little crazy and actually cut out 24 placemats! No wonder it took me so long to get them quilted and bound.

One set was given away as a wedding gift and then a month ago my daughter got a new dining room set and said she needed new placemats.  When I moved into my new studio in January I had so much fun finding all kinds of things that I had forgotten I had and I remembered seeing a set of these. I pulled them out and……only had 7…..now I knew I had more but couldn’t find them. There are only 5 in her family so I knew she could use them until I found the other one.

More Colorful Psychedelic Placemats

Just a few days before Easter I found them in a container of UFOs (unfinished quilt objects) and pulled out my black Kona fabric to bind it. I have no idea why I had finished 7….maybe I ran out of my black fabric.

I still had 8 without binding so I put them out on my cutting table where they kept getting in my way until I couldn’t stand it anymore and had to finish them up!

The backing on the placemats is a batik that I bought several years ago. It is heavier than most batiks and I didn’t care for it but it makes a beautiful backing.

This really looks like a photo from the 1980s!

Most of you know that I really, really love batiks and it seems like that is all I have been working with lately.

Actually last week I did make a table runner and table topper for my AccuQuilt guest post that weren’t made with batiks and I forgot to mention that!

These beautiful fabrics are a combination of batiks and regular cotton. Can you tell which ones are batiks??? I’ll give you a hint…..there are 3 of them.

Since I wrote this post, I have designed simple crazy quilt placemats that I think you will like. Here are my quilted holiday placemats.

I also made the crazy quilt placemats in some beautiful teal batiks.

This is a fun project to use up lots of fat quarter fabrics, do you use placemats? We usually use one or two in the center of our table to protect the table from the hot dishes.
