Fast and Easy Table Runner Tutorial

The beautiful Christmas collection I’m working was called Peace on Earth by Ro Gregg from Fabri-Quilt. The dark green border I used is from the Fabri-Quilt Leather collection. I am sure it is no longer available.

working on the quilt blocks

Follow the diagram below to put your blocks together.

Sew the rows together.

Home for the Holidays quilt block sections

You will make three blocks for the table runner.  They are 12 1/2″ square unfinished.

Join the three blocks together.

Border 1

Always measure your piece before cutting borders, if your size is a little different than mine, then adjust to fit yours.

  • Light Green – cut (2) 1½” x 12½” and sew to the sides
  • Light Green – cut (2) 1½” x 38½” and sew to the top and bottom

Border 2

For the final border add the pieces to the top and bottom first (this ensures your fabric will be wide enough for the border).

  • Dark Green – cut (2) 3″ x 38½” and sew to the top and bottom
  • Dark Green – cut (2) 3″ x 19½” and sew to the sides

Add your batting and backing and quilt as desired. Use the 2 1/2″ strips of dark green for the binding. Sew the binding on by machine using my machine binding tutorial.

  1. Connie,
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful runner pattern with us. I purchased several of your Christmas runners and mats patterns during your sale for holiday patterns. I’m getting ready to start some toppers and mats and will use many of these to construct.
Should have started earlier, but seem to work better under pressure!
    Sending many blessings.

  19. Not much quilting or sewing hapening here this year. The weather has been so nice instead of the usual snow and cold that I spent lots of time outdoors doing things with the Grands. Hosting a party for 120 famiy members on Dec. 20 so my mind is full of ideas along with food preparation. We are on a 7 year rotation so next year I will be a "guest" with an uncluttered mind. It really is a wonderful family event with 2 meals and lots of social events for the young children especially.

I do love the line of fabric and it would be great for next years projects.

I've actually gotten a lot of Christmas sewing done. I did new stockings for my folks and husband, since we spend Christmas morning together and my husbands stocking never matched ours. I also did some mug rugs for the girls at the office and a little tree skirt for my super skinny apartment sized tree! But that means I've used up all my Christmas fabrics 🙁

I designed and made my sister a table runner for her family and mailed it to her the day before Thanksgiving so she could open it early and use it now. I will post that one on my blog today. I also knit little mittens in red yarn for the gift tag. I made a snowman out of a sock that I gave to someone, as well as a felt mitten ornament. That's what I made with a Christmas theme.

Beautiful runner and fabrics. I have sewn several Christmas gifts this year but haven't quilted any of them. Had plans for a couple quilted items but will have to make them for next year.

I just finished a Christmas table runner and a small topper made with the scraps from the first one. And I'm embroidering a small red work piece for a pillow. But that probably won't be done for this year.

  186. I MADE A QUILT FOR MY SON AND ONE FOR MY DAUGHTER IN LAW. ALSO MADE ONE FOR ME, PLUS PILLOWS FOR MY COUCH AND A TREE SKIRT.
