Welcome to the Island Batik Ambassador blog hop! Everyone is giving you a little peek at their creative space and today you’ll get to see mine. This is my favorite room in the whole house! Last month I bought a Featherweight sewing machine and did a post about cleaning and moving things around in my quilt room and that sparked the idea of a blog hop showing our rooms.

My Quilt Studio

My room isn’t very big and I am constantly changing things depending on what I’m working on. Bob and my dad just shake their heads when they see me tearing things apart in there.Lately I have been working with AccuQuilt dies and my GO! Big Electric cutter so……I moved out a couple sewing machines so I could have a little more room. I will be doing a monthly guest post and tutorial on the AccuQuilt blog. I had a post up there yesterday.

When you stand in the door this is what you see. I like having small quilts hanging on the wall. A couple of them keep reminding me to finish the patterns for them. Right now I only have one of my vintage 15-91 Singer sewing machine setup (in here).  The AccuQuilt GO! Big Cutting machine is on the table against the wall close to my dies.

Underneath the table is a scrap baskets and a couple boxes of different size blocks. Some of my thread is in the tall storage container.

My Quilt Studio

I don’t like my sewing machine up against a wall, I feel very claustrophobic having a wall two feet in front of me. It also bothers me if my room gets too clustered with containers open and stuff all over the floor. Yes, it does happen once in a while but I’m always in a hurry to get it back in order. I have tried putting the sewing machine in front of the window but there is too much glare. I also like my little stool that I use. I believe it is actually made for guys working on cars……I love it!  If I’m going to quilt a large quilt I just move one of the tables behind my sewing machine to help support the weight. I do all my free-motion quilting on my 15-91 sewing machine.

My Quilt Studio

I have a view of the Mississippi river and the road so I get to see what is going on outside while I’m quilting.

My Quilt Studio

Behind my sewing machine is this row of cabinets that I got from a friend when she was remodeling her basement. If you want to know what is in the cabinets….just check out my Quilt Studio page and you’ll find out. Builder Bob cut me a piece of wood a little larger than my cabinet top and I have my cutting mat sitting on it. It gives me a cutting area of 24″ x 36″.  I also do my ironing to the right of it using a couple small pads and my vintage iron. If I need to iron a large quilt I just setup the ironing board in the living room.

My Quilt Studio

Something I really like about my cabinets is all of these little cubbyholes. When I am cutting up fabric I try and do something with the scraps right away. I have a tray of 1 1/2″ squares and another of 2″ squares. Next to my sewing machine is a drawer with 2 1/2″ squares. Whenever one of the trays or the drawer gets full……it is time to make something with them. I also have “some” of my charm squares sitting right there in the open…..waiting to be used.

My Quilt Studio

I always keep a step stool handy in case I want to reach a quilt or batting on top of the bookcase. I also use the step stool when I am taking photos of projects. Is that all the batting I have???? No way! There is a bolt in our bedroom behind the bathroom door and another one in the laundry room

My Quilt Studio

Lately I’ve been picking up some of the great scrapbook containers at Joann Fabric when they are 50% off so I can keep projects separate and most importantly……visible. If something is in a drawer or a box….I’ll forget about it.  Here I have some batiks that I received from Island Batik that will be used in a project for a blog hop next month. I really, really love being an ambassador for them!

My Quilt Studio

Design wall……well that is something that I really don’t have. There is a small one behind the door but….I usually forget it is there and…..what is one it. Hmm, I had better finish a couple of these projects.

My Quilt Studio

This month I moved my computer out of the quilt room and back out on the desk. It won’t be long and I know I’ll move it back into my quilt room.

My Quilt Studio

Last month we had thought we would build on to our house so I could have a bigger quilt room but our lots are small and we forgot that our septic field runs right behind the house so…..no building on. Then Bob decided that he really doesn’t need a woodworking shop as he never makes anything anymore and the space would be better used as a quilt room. The room is in the basement and has no window so he would have to put one in. First he is working on selling his stuff. So…..maybe by next winter we’ll be working on a new room. In the meantime…..I’m happy with what I have.

My sewing table faces the wall which I did not like so I took my mother in law's old dining room gold mirror that has a Chinese look to it and hung it in front of me so I can see everything behind me, even the window.

  15. I love everything about your sewing room! I certainly can understand about wanting a larger room for your quilting. We moved to a new place in March where I finally have a sewing room of my own!

  16. Connie, what a great looking sewing/quilting space. Those cabinets are wonderful.

  17. Deb @ Frugal Little Bungalow says:

  18. I loved seeing your room! The view you have is nice. You can keep a watch out and also give your eyes a break! Wish I had this kind of room to work in!

  19. I love all the organization in your room Connie. It's funny you specifically mentioned your stool, and yes, it is made for working in a garage on cars or other things men tend to fiddle around with. I have been considering getting one just like that to use in front of my sewing machine. I haven't decided though if it would be comfortable for me with my knees. I do like how much less floor space it takes up as compared to an office chair which is what I've always used. My room is small enough too that I can move from my desk over to my sewing machine with a quick roll in my chair to get over there. When doing machine embroidery it is easier since I really don't want to sit and stare at the machine while it's stitching out something with a lot of stitches. I still need to be close though in case of any problems. I'm still considering the stool like yours though.

Your design 'wall'? I wonder if your husband could cut some strips of wood to make a frame, even buy some insulation board and have that cut to fit the length and width of your door. Then cover that with some batting or whatever you want to use for your design wall. Then figure out something that would allow you to hang that over your door. Each time you go to your room to sew, just grab that to hang it over your door after its been opened so you see those things and they aren't forgotten behind the door like you do now. 🙂 I am thinking of something similar to what is used on those over the door towel hangers or something similar. I hope you know what I mean.

LOVE your room though Connie, especially that gorgeous window and view. I get to look out my tiny window and see the siding on our back room which juts out beyond our house as it was added onto the house before I bought it.

  20. What great space! I'm not sure I'd want to leave that view even for a bigger room.

  21. Like the setup … my room is smaller 🙂
DH gave me a GO BIG for Christmas. What is the best way to store the dies? I have 2 large square ones, 2 or 3 long rectangular ones and some 6 in ones. Not really planning on getting more for quite a while. I need to use the ones I have.

Hmm, will have to check out those scrap storage bins at JoAnn's you mentioned…I have been using the Sterilite stacking ones for scraps but those for projects look pretty perfect!

  26. Calicojoan says:

It's always fun to peek in on you. Hands down your view from your sewing room is the best of the best! 🙂 I have a basement studio, that I don't mind at all. Lots of lights down there and it works great. My only fear is if I get too old to get up and down the stairs! My remodel guy tells me he can install a chair lift then! hahahahahaha All will be well!

  27. Joyce Carter says:

Very neat sewing room, Connie. I love the way everything is organized.

  35. That room looks pretty big to me, Connie. Whatever size it is, you certainly make the most of it. Not so sure about moving to the basement. Builder Bob better put in a BIG window as I would miss all that light and that pretty view that you have now.
