Coffee Time Mug Rug

I seem to have quite a few half finished projects cluttering my quilt studio lately……so I decided to work on a couple. This little mug rug just needed some quick quilting and a binding and it was done.
I cut the design with my Sizzix Big Shot and a die last year…..actually this is the leftover from the design. Sometimes I cut my piece of fabric a little bigger so I can use the inverted design as something else. I used Heat & Bond Lite on the back of the batik fabric.

Here is the project that started the whole thing….well actually I think I originally started it because I had some left over half square triangles that I wanted to use. Add a square in the center with a design on it, add borders and you have a pillow. Now you know why I have so many pillows!

The lines in this flourish are tiny so I just did a little free-motion straight stitching…..last year. Now I have the batting and backing all pinned together and I even have the zipper in the pillow back. Hopefully by next week I’ll have it finished.

Fortunately the scraps that were leftover have already been cut into 2 1/2″ squares and 1 1/2″ squares and put into the scrap containers so I don’t have to figure out something to make AGAIN from the leftovers. Tell me I’m not the only one who does this!!

  1. I love the positive/negative effect of the design, both are very pretty but I think I like the mug rug best. It's always nice to have some lace cute to set down my coffee cup.

  2. This is such a pretty design! I can't wait to be able to get back to sewing instead of unpacking & straightening! Love your pillow too!

  3. Mmmmmm! Having my morning coffee and reading this post. What a pretty gift set this would make for someone. Get comfy with the pillow and a cuppa on the matching mug rug! Perfect for the cold weather outside my door!

  4. Two great projects. Yes, I cut those project scraps down into my fabric food chain – even down to that 1.5" size so many are afraid of.

  5. I love how you made the 2 positive/negative projects out of this!

  6. Just lovely! A mug rug and a bit of favorite tea or coffee – what a great gift this would make.

I need to look through some of my orphan blocks and see what might lend itself to this idea.

  7. I love using leftovers to make other fun things. Last year I over bought for a quilt so when I was done making the quilt top I also made a pillow case, a tote bag that the quilt will fit into and a zipper bag, a giant pin cushion and still have left overs. Now I just need to have the quilt top quilted and it will all be done. 🙂

You are not alone. I have recently been doing the same thing — hate having bits and pieces left over. Of course, the extended project creates more leftovers …..
