Dancing Umbrellas Batik Table Runner

I finished up this beautiful BIG table runner which is 20 x 40, much too big for my kitchen table but I’m sure it will look good on my daughter’s.

I showed a couple of photos of this earlier when I was doing my free-motion applique on it. Now to keep from giving it to her until Christmas!

I decided to put the little birds on a couple of branches instead of on the umbrellas.

For the background, I used about 3 different neutral batiks and a green batik for the binding.

Here is a close-up of one of the flowers.

This pattern is called Spring Showers and is designed by Edyta Star.

I had plenty of flower petals and leaves that I had cut with my AccuQuilt Go! I actually cut my umbrellas backwards – no one knows it but me……well until now.

Anyway, several people asked about the applique and it is all done in free motion. My vintage Singer 15-91 sewing machine only does a straight stitch.

Sometimes I do the wiggle stitch and other times I just free-motion straight stitch around the applique pieces. I have been using this sewing machine for over 20 years and love it.

These are the dies I used to make the quilted table runner. The Simple Shapes die and the Dancing Umbrella die by Edyta Star.

This is an amazing design and I’d like to tackle applique as it adds a vibrancy to any project.
I’m visualising matching place-mats with two flowers and one umbrella on each. I hope it is okay to make these so it’s a set.
Your creativity is beyond amazing, Connie.

    1. Placemats would be beautiful Robyn, what a great idea!

I am amazed and in love with all the appliqued pieces. I have never
done applique. Is it done with the quilt layer in tact already or is it
done with just the top i.e. the bird, or the flower, etc.
    Any advice would be great
    thanks for the inspiration.

This is beautiful and I adore how you intermingled the umbrella fabrics. Backwards? I don't see it. I see pretty and Spring Showers we need so desperately. Creative Bliss…there is no backwards.

  6. Kati from Kati's Quilting says:

Do you turn the applique edges under before zigzagging them down?

    1. No I don’t, I applied Heat n Bond Lite to the fabric before cutting out the applique shapes.

Oh my goodness this is absolutely beautiful. Maybe someday I'll invest in the AccuQuilt cutter. I've seen so many lovely projects that have been made with the dies/cuts from one.

I have a big table if by some chance your daughter doesn't like it. (Well, a girl can dream can't she?!)

  9. It turned out great! Very pretty as usual. 🙂

  10. Well I can't tell that the umbrellas are backwards! Turned out great and your daughter will love it I'm sure. I have two parts of my mom's Singer Red Eye treadle in my house now (YAY!!). Just waiting for the wood part. My son-in-law is treating the damaged parts of the wood for me. I'm wondering if I will be able to FMQ on the treadle like you do on your vintage electric Singer.

I do so want to find a Singer like that. I actually learned to sew by machine on a treadle Singer. Now that doesn't make me an antique. The Rural Electrification Project had reached that part of the of the Arkansas Ozarks, but my great grandmother wasn't ready to give up her treadle machine.
Love the table runner. May be ordering those dies soon.

  16. Missy Shay says:

The wiggle stitch? LOL Your table runner is beautiful as always!

  17. WHAT!!!? Backward umbrellas? We can't have that, lol.
Connie, it looks great. Does your daughter ever look at you blog to see what she's going to get for Christmas? I sure would.

  18. The Slow Quilter says:

Presentation is the one thing I lack sometimes. The way you have present this quilt with the little vase of flowers just make it pop even more. I am sure your daughter will love it.

  19. that's lovely and love the wiggle stitch on there! What a great present
