Twisting Heart Valentine Tutorial

Are you looking for a quilted project that can be used for Valentine’s Day and is beautiful enough to leave up all year long? I created this quilted Twisting Heart wall hanging several years ago and it continues to be one of my most popular tutorials.

This is a lot of fun to make using the Tiny Twister tool. I have also made a baby quilt using this template that I’ll share below.

Twisting Heart block in EQ

Twisting Heart Valentine Tutorial

18″ x 18″

The size of this wall hanging is 18 inches square, it could have made it into a pillow!

I also drew this block in Electric Quilt 8 and have a diagram that I made in EQ.

I didn’t do a very good job picking my light pinks……one is too light. You can see in the next photo the colors I picked in Electric Quilt, I wanted the two light ones to be very similar.

Twisting Heart block in EQ

Now if I hadn’t just done a whole month of Pink for the Rainbow Challenge I might have had the perfect one in my stash.

Cutting the fabrics for the quilt

I used 3½-inch squares in the following colors:

  • 10 dark red squares
  • 11 red squares
  • 6 medium pink
  • 7 light-medium pink
  • 15 background squares

Use a 1/4th inch seam allowance.

Follow this diagram for the placement of the colors. Note: the top row has a background square in the center, not pink.

Twisting Heart block piecing

After you have this pieced you will add the 2½-inch border of the background color.

When you cut the blocks using the template you will be cutting blocks using the intersection of the border/block for blocks as shown in the diagram below.

Placement of templates in the Twisting Heart quilt

I forgot to take some photos of cutting the blocks so I sewed a couple of extra squares together so you could see how to cut the blocks and then turn them.

How to use the template for cutting the blocks

I am using the Primitive Gatherings Pinwheels template I bought from a quilt store some time ago. The replacement is the Tiny Twister Tool. If you would like to make a smaller or bigger quilt you can use the other sizes of Twister templates.

It is always fun to show how much the piece shrinks in size after you cut and piece them back together.

Showing how the quilt shrinks after sewing the blocks back together

I have another tutorial here that has better photos showing how to turn the blocks after you cut them.

Once you have pieced the blocks together add a 3-inch border of red fabric and quilt as desired. I cut my binding into 2½-inch strips the width of fabric and it took 2 strips. You can read my binding tutorial for more info.

I used a burgundy Aurifil 50 wt thread on the red sections of the wall hanging and then a cream Aurifil 50 wt thread for the background.

Closeup of quilting on the Twisting heart quilt

My free motion flowers are a little wonky…but I like them.

Take a look at the back, I think it is always neat to share a photo like this.

Back of the Twisting Heart quilt

Here is another Twister quilt that you might enjoy! That is little Sadie with long hair, she doesn’t like to be brushed so it is easier to keep her hair short. We have no idea what kind of dog she is but thankfully she doesn’t shed.

Sadie Worldly Quilt Tutorial

As you can see, my free motion quilting isn’t perfect but….it works! I hope you have enjoyed the Twisting Heart Valentine Tutorial!

  26. I'm not an experienced quilter, and I have some questions:
    1. What seam allowance are you using?

    2. Do you have a background border as well as the red border?

    3. If so, when you use the template, do you start with the intersection of the background border and the first square?

    Thanks for your help!

Oh, Connie what a great tutorial. Wish I had it last year when our quilt group were making these in the Christmas Wreath version for a quilt we put together to raise money for outr local food pantry. We used the smallest twister ruler and made it into a wall hanging. Each block was made with different reds, greens and creams, but then it was sashed with a black tone on tone that tied it all together. Barb
