Mississippi River Mud Quilt

This is another batik quilt, wow 2 big quilts this month! I decided to call it Mississippi River Mud.

The brown batik was something I bought about a year ago and didn’t care for it at all. When it was mixed with the other fabrics I really like the way it turned out.

I really do quilt my big quilts on a domestic sewing machine. I use my 15-91 Singer that was built in 1951. I have another sewing machine behind it that helps support the weight.

I used Bottom Line thread in the bobbin and Essential thread from Connecting Threads on top. The combination worked just fine. I basically work with the threads I have on hand. The batting is Warm & Natural and I used muslin for the back.

I used the Easy to Sew Quilt Pattern designed by Marcia’s Crafty Sewing & Quilting. It was a fun quilt to make.

I used one of the same batik prints for the border as I had used in my Intertwined by the River quilt. I’ll have to get a picture of it on our king size bed. Builder Bob really likes this quilt……..even with the yellow in it!

Some people stay home and quilt……….

other people go fishing……

So while they were boating I used their tree again as a prop for my quilt!

I’m glad I took these pictures a couple days ago as our weather changed and it was 50 degrees and raining today. We really needed the rain. My internet was also on the blink most of the day.

Love the colours together! I can't imagine using a regular 'modern' machine to make something that big let alone something from 1951. I'm in awe. Thanks so much for sharing at Etcetorize this week!

  2. I really, really like that quilt!

  3. LOVE your quilt! Especially the picture 4th from the bottom. That is so artistic!

  4. Dora, the Quilter says:

Indeed, Mississippi Mud is a great name for that quilt!
One of the things I love most about my vintage Necchis and Singer 15-89 and 15-91 is that they are so accommodating to whatever threads I feed them! I've been able to use threads that I had come close to throwing out!

  5. Bethany (Make Me A Quilt) says:

It's a beautiful quilt, I love how well the colors compliment each other. The yellow really stands out and looks great!

  6. Who knew I could love mud? LOL, seriously, again a beautiful quilt! The neighbors are So accommodating! Inquiring minds…you set up 2 machines back to back to support the quilt as you are quilting?

  7. Gorgeous batik quilt. Love the earthy colors. How do you get do much sewing done? You either don't sleep or you are speedy Gonzales? Weather has been quite pleasant in Charlotte, NC. Usually we would be facing 90 degrees by now. We do need some rain though as I am having to water my flowers daily.

  8. Perfect name for it with those lovely batiks. Great finish 🙂

  9. You are are amazing, Connie. You make "mud" look great! lol. Just kidding about the mud… nifty title. The colors really work in this quilt. It was fun to see it displayed outdoors.

  10. It´s a wonderful work. Amazing the batiks and the colors!
    Congratulations!

Beautiful quilt Connie. Silly me I wondered why it had been so long since you posted anything, since I didn't see anything from you on my dashboard. Well I thought I was a follower and I guess I never actually joined, so no wonder I hadn't seen anything in a long time. Okay now I am following officially and will have to catch up with you and what you have been working on.

  12. Ya know, by itself, I don't care for that brown either…and I don't think I've ever even BOUGHT a piece of brown, but daggum if it doesn't WORK there! MS Mud is perfect! It's really beautiful & striking just the way it is!! (as is your photo location)

  13. Jacqueline says:

I appreciate all the facts/details you put in about your quilt – ie thread, pattern, etc. I wish I could quilt like this on my domestic. Thanks for the inspiration to keep trying.

  14. I love your quilt, but then I like most all of your quilts! 😉

  15. love the dark colors! beautiful as always! April @ Little Mama Hen

  16. Oh ya that brown looks incredible with those colors. Another great quilt and the name is just so perfect. Again I see all those colors in the background of your picture. Just beautiful.

  17. Oh, that quilt is so pretty.
wow! I can't believe you do your quilting with that machine.

  18. Apple Avenue Quilts says:

  20. Quiet Quilter says:

Oh! those colors, and the name fits it so well…but it is lovelier than mud!

  21. Gorgeous quilt and your FMQ is amazing!

  22. Christine L says:

Love the colors and the brown was perfect. I really like the name too! Thanks for the link to the pattern… I see this one in my near future!!!!

  23. I love that you still sew on your 1951 machine! They don't make 'em like they used to, that's for sure! Both my mother's and my grandmother's machines from the 50s are still going strong too. Love the batiks and colors.

  24. You're right, the brown works really well with those colours. Great choice, Connie!

  25. You should do a post on FMQ on an older machine. I have my grandmother's old treadle machine which is very similar to yours, made about the same time. I can't imagine using it. I have enough trouble with my other 2 Singer machines (1970 model and 1995 model) and I'm thinking about a 4th just to do FMQ because I can't get the tension to behave on the 2 I have!

  26. Betty Lou says:

This is a great quilt, I took a look at the pattern, just may order it. Hard to figure out the block.

  27. Perfect name for your new quilt! Such treat to see the lovely landscape around the quilt!

  28. Melissa Corry says:

It is beautiful!!! I love the name you choose. So fun 🙂 THanks for linking up 🙂

  29. Beautiful quilt. And I just love that machine!

  30. Lovely quilt. I also quilt on a domestic sewing machine. The middle is a challenge. haha

  31. Love your quilt. I don't understand how you can quilt such a big quilt on your domestic machine. You are awsome! Love the title you chose too.

  32. That is just GORGEOUS!!!!! I love the colors, the name and the whole quilt.

  33. Great job! I have that same machine that I picked up at a thrift shop but I have not used it to FMQ… I should try it… I use my bernina which has a pretty small opening.

  34. I really don't know how you manage to quilt big quilts on your normal machine -well done you! Lovely quilt too and so much more fun than fishing!

  35. I really like this one! What a muscle builder that must have been, too. Just love the last photo in the tree – such a beautiful setting.
